Biography of Tsuneo Yoshikawa
Tsuneo Yoshikawa was born in Osaka, Japan, on December 19, 1941. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Precision Engineering in 1964 and 1966, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics in 1969, all from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. From 1969 to 1970, he was a Research Assistant and from 1970 to 1986 he was an Associate Professor at the Automation Research Laboratory, Kyoto University. From 1973 to 1975, he was an NRC Resident Research Associate at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, USA. From 1975 to 2005, he was a Professor of robotics and control engineering at Kyoto University. From 2005 to 2012, he was a Professor in the Department of Human and Computer Intelligence, College of Information Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University. From 2012 to 2013, He was a Chair Professor in the Research Organization of Science & Engineering, Ritsumeikan University. From April 2013, He is a Senior Researcher in the Research Organization of Science & Engineering, Ritsumeikan University. His research interests up to now include robotics (analysis and control of robot manipulators, force control, modeling and control of flexible manipulators, master-slave systems, control of redundant manipulators) and control systems theory (robust control and adaptive control of nonlinear mechanical systems). He is the author of "Foundations of Robotics" (MIT Press, 1990) and a coeditor of "Large-Scale Systems Control and Decision Making" (Dekker, 1990). Dr. Yoshikawa received Outstanding Paper Awards from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (Japan) in 1975, 1985, and 1991, from the Institute of Systems, Control and Information Engineers (Japan) in 1982, 1991 and 1998, and from the Virtual Reality Society of Japan in 2000. He received the Robotics and Mechatronics Award from the JSME (Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers) Robotics and Mechatronics Division in 1998. He received a Fanuc FA Robot Foundation Best Paper Award in 2005. He also received The 1995 JDSMC Best Paper Award from the ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Division (USA), The 1997 ICRA Best Conference Paper Award from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (USA), and The IEEE RO-MAN Best Paper Award Finalist Certificate from the RO-MAN 2007 Organizing Committee. He was a Technical Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation from 1991 to 1994, and was a Program Vice-Chair of the 1996 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. He was the President of the Robotics Society of Japan from 2003 to 2005. He is an honorary member of Robotics Society of Japan and a Fellow of IEEE (USA).
